Has anyone here taken a commission-only sales role? I've got an offer on the table and am trying to figure out what I should be looking for from the company before I commit. Like, what would make it actually worth the risk?

I’m assuming it’s 1099 which means that you will be self-employed. I advise anyone considering entrepreneurial to have reserve funds for 1 year to live with no income while you work to get in the black.
Have you met them in person and done homework on their company? I’m in the insurance industry. There are more companies than not that broadcast recruit. 90% fail, but not before selling all of their family and friends and investing in sales contacts.
Are you assuming ALL of the risk? If the company is assuming a share of the risk on your success, what about you makes you worth the risk for them? Does it seem too good to be true?
Ask your gut. The. Listen and Obey your gut. Ask your gut to speak up louder than the recruiter.

Only consider it if there is proven inbound demand, transparent conversion data, realistic ramp time, and written commission protection. Otherwise you are carrying disproportionate risk.

When I mentioned commission protection, I meant written terms that protect your earnings after you generate the deal. For example, if you close an account and the company changes the commission structure later, you still receive the agreed payout.
It can also include protection if a deal closes after you leave, or if accounts are reassigned after you have done most of the work. Without that in writing, companies can sometimes change territories, plans, or timing and the salesperson loses the commission they expected.
Your point about savings is very real too. Commission only roles can take months to ramp, so having a financial runway makes a huge difference.

Yes and it was a huge mistake on my part. The earning potential sounded too good to be true on paper and it sure was. Not saying all commission only roles are like this but I would be doing more research before accepting the role.

like

They're probably advertising the commission numbers from their top 10-15 % of sales personnel. What you *can* achieve in an ideal scenario, not that you are *likely* to achieve.

One thing I learned talking to people who did it is to look at rep turnover. If most reps last three to six months, that tells you a lot. High churn usually means people aren’t actually making money, no matter how good the pitch sounds in interviews.

That's great advice!

A commission-only sales role can be quite challenging and rewarding depending on the brand you are working with.
If it's an established brand and a the products are customer friendly then it can be a great deal because sales becomes easier but if the product is probably a streamlined product where prospects are not compelled to add it to their daily lives or solve a daily or immediate problem for them, then it would require a lot of work and patience.
Such a role is not for someone who doesn't have passion for sales and marketing, its not also suitable for someone who doesn't have the necessary skill.
So if you must take up the job, first understand the product by conducting your research to determine how easy or difficult it is to sell such product. Also research on the brand and how people see it, that way you can sell the brand other than the product and this will help you greatly.

I work in field sales as an IC. My aspirational career path is to end up in people leadership. Recently, an Inside management position opened up that’s been brought to my attention by the hiring director. Question is, is going back Inside the right move to get into started in leadership? Or should I continue down the field path and wait until those field management slots open up?

I am looking for a new job at the end of a long career. I have excellent experience in IP and Supply Chain Management. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. The comparable positions at my company are filled by one of the big executive search firms. Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!

I'm an SA, and my fiance is finishing up her residency and loves the medical field. I make good money and have a house but I feel like the relationship and the obligations (house, family) are anchors and holding me back from living my life. I want to sell and live on the road, traveling and being free.

I love my fiance and my family but I just want to quit everything and just hit the road.

Fiance does not want that lifestyle. Shes more of a 2-3 weeks of vacation is good.

She offered me 6.3 LPA as CTC with 21% variable. 5.2 as basic. Rest part in comments..
