The week when the firm was closed
The week from Christmas to New Year’s
Only Christmas to New Year’s. Well, I probably did some work then too. Sigh.
What is this “vacation” word you speak of?
No, I was actually just reflecting that I’ve taken no time off for nearly 2 years
Last 18 months, definitely not
Yes
No. I can barely get a long weekend even with 2 weeks of preparation. Extended vacations are not compatible with professional services.
Nope. I’m a tax partner and tax changes have continued to rob any normal slow time. Biden’s policies are going to add even more demands an time and stress.
Agreed! I roll my eyes at anyone else in prof services that talks about a “change” they have to deal with. It’s constant in tax.
I did. No laptop, no calls. Lots of communication with team and clients prior to taking the vacation. Did check emails on my phone every once in a while, so I would not be buried in emails when I got back.
Probably not a full week but have had a couple of weeks where I was able to unplug 99% of the time.
We get the Christmas week off- that’s the closest I’ve got to a full disconnect. I’d also comment that it’s an American thing- my partner colleagues in Europe are MUCH better at disconnecting, some for three weeks at a time!
Not I. I suppose I was pretty quiet between Christmas and New Years but I wasn’t on vacation.
Thanksgiving in Phoenix but that was only Wednesday to Friday so technically no.
Yes, do it all the time. It's about setting personal boundaries and sticking to it. Those that don't do it are choosing not to.
Nope. Only a day maybe.
What's your definition here? I've taken vacations a handful of times. Yes, I checked in while out but not in a way that felt intrusive to my time off. I don't mind checking in a bit, it's not a big deal. I've also had 'intrusive' work into PTO, but generally ok with the balance
No. And I received an RFP on 12/23 due 1/4, so I worked the entire disconnect too.
Nope!
Thanks for the responses. Part of the reason for my question was (1) to confirm I'm not alone - clearly I am not; and (2) to see if you all think this affects our people's interest in making partner and the long-term viability of the role if it's just become too much.
I had a manager quit a few weeks ago and literally what he said to me was “I look at those above me and there is no one I aspire to be. Why would I stay?”
