Wait, you like middle school children? Why would you switch to high school then? The salaries are about the same. No one likes working with middle school kids.
High schoolers are a different energy. They're more independent but sometimes tougher. Many find it rewarding once they build relationships, but if you love middle school vibes, it’s OK to stick with that age. Your passion matters most!
I taught MS as my first job from 94-'99, and it went fine, but I always wanted to teach HS and have been doing so since then.
HS students are (just a little) more mature, and I can teach science at a more sophisticated level.
Also, HS students can usually just chill during unstructured time (especially since smartphones came along), but in MS, unstructured time can be a nightmare!
I have heard from so many high school teachers that they used to teach middle school and tried high school, just to try it out, and never went back. The demand is different. I kind of think of this picture.
I've taught in lower grades but in recent years I've been dealing with the older students. I like the atmosphere. As long as the kids are engaged and interested in the material it can be great. I would give it a chance, you may find that you like it once you're used to the change.
Yes! Was hard but worth it -- I'm actively building a tool focused on supporting teachers in their careers. If you're interested in participating in some user testing check it out here: https://www.upwork.com/jobs/~021978889500900928368
I taught Middle School for 22 years before transition to High School. This is my 7th year of High School math. I love the higher level of math and many students (not 9th graders) are more mature. However, I can't do some of the fun stuff in high school with the same math as I could do in middle school. No song, few games. sigh
I switched from junior high to high school after thirty years. I miss the out right goofiness of my ninth graders but I appreciate the modicum of maturity my seniors exhibit. Both ages have their charms. You just appreciate them for what they are.
