I am not sure how much companies will change in the future, right now it seems like they are trying to stay out of those things as much as possible. If they can give employees the space to do something that will help feel like the company is supportive, that might be the way to go.
That depends on a lot of circumstances, primarily being the organization someone works for and the issue in question. Some companies (most perhaps) would prefer to sidestep any controversial political issue, for obvious reasons. That can be difficult, as we're in an era where agitation and disinformation on social media can inflame people. There have been a number of stories over the past year of companies letting people go because they got involved in activity which put the company in a bad light. That's not going to change, if anything it's probably going to become more restrictive.
