OP you need to work your network and just find opportunities to jump into the system and do configuration. You need to find someone who will help you learn the ropes. My philosophy is get hands on and make things happen in the system. That's the only way to build hard skills in SAP.
It's a tough spot. If you have no desire to get technical in SAP then you should move on to something else.
daily, but as an end user, an advisor to other teams, and as client support. I'm functional and don't have a desire to be technical. I want to move to a new company, but it seems like everyone wants to put me in SAP because of the certification, but then I don't meet the experience requirements because I have no life cycle or implementation experience. The only thing "technical" I have done is creating report variants or screen layout variants for folks.
My questions - what can I do to increase my SAP knowledge while on my current project? Should I give up trying to move to an SAP role in a new firm and try to get in based on my other experiences (strategy, BPR, PM)?
Are you at the D?
Depends on what you like. If you like what you are doing then your career will be restricted to end user training or end user roles. If you want to become SAP Consultant, you will have to get out off comfort zone.
Unless you change what you are doing you will not get different opportunities
I am.
M1 I think you missed my question - I'm not in my comfort zone. Not at all. I would rather have done one of two things:
1. Done actual SAP consulting to build my knowledge after certification.
2. Had nothing to do with SAP and build my strategy consulting skills.
As of right now I am stuck between those two worlds and feel like I am not able to specialize because of that. Where I am is where I am. So my question was - what can I do to build functional knowledge, or should I drop SAP, give up the "experience" I have there and focus on other things?
Quit
That was insightful, thanks.
Quit and goto Accenture?
Ask your leadership team to put you in a role where you are doing hands on config. Make sure you have a Manager agree to put and grow you in that role. You have to be firm on your position otherwise you won't go anywhere.
Can you move to a scrum role where you’re working with the dev team daily? It’ll get you more hands on exposure and experience with the tool itself, while still building the strategy and PM skills
