Yes. 7 years ago I worked with a CMO of a major Fortune 500 who hired a PR firm just for his own personal PR. 🙄 It’s definitely amplified by social now and everyone’s expectation (right or wrong), that they need to be a “thought leader.”
Ha! Same here. Worked with a CMO who insisted on pushing his own personal agenda. Borderline narcissistic
We always liked these CMOs. The agency could help make them famous by producing great work - and they tend to be the ones who wanted to buy the great work.
I suspect they spend a lot of time on their brands, and a key strategy that any C-suite can employ from a comms and marketing perspective, is likeability, nowadays CEO’s are centre stage, and so are other members of the C-suite. Those key figures being in the public eye and liked by the press, consumers and investors is vitally important. The tenures of CMO’s are generally short, look at it from their perspective, if you could leverage the platform and influence your job gives you to ensure that you’ll get another job, you would do it. The most important brand you’ll ever work on is your own. More people should realise that. They’d progress quicker in their careers. No point doing a good job if people don’t know you’re doing a good job.
Very valid point, especially considering tenure. I’m all for personal brand, but to a point it sometimes strikes me as going overboard. Admittedly I’m a skeptic at times though, and often wonder if the reality of they’re doing matches the image that they’re trying to project.
The Fernando effect
Most verticals end up with some loudmouth as the face.
Sample bias.
You're more likely to hear of the loudmouths.
Pretty much. The couple that come to mind that aren’t are the better CMOs I have worked with.
