How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

7yoe is aligned with L4, especially with only 3 in product. L5 is around 9-10, L6 12+.
If you already got the L4 offer, it is basically too late. You cannot negotiate your way to L5 (not in this market for PMs, unless you're some specialized AI candidate from a key AI player). L5s sre interviewed according to higher standards, with possibly different interviewers and different competition. Maybe you can ask to re-interview for a different role, but that is unlikely to work.
"Will likely pay me lower"? Get the offer first and then see. L4 PMs un MTV have been making more than 330k, but not remote. If you want to maximize flexibility and the ratio of pay to cost of living, stay remote in MCOL.
Is this for a Product or Strategy Role?
Agree with Google 1. You could think about the value beyond just Google brand- there’s so much rapid industry evolution (and highly qualified laid off googlers) I wouldn’t over invest in the LTV.
E.g., Does the role offer distinctive product/industry/AI/learning exposure that aren’t available to you now ? Is the team primed for growth?
Just one POV :)
And congratulations regardless!
