Have you ever been in a role where you’re taking on additional responsibilities that weren’t included in the JD? How have you handled this?

Can you use this as a negotiation tactic to renegotiate compensation?

I did that years ago. I was in a job where the responsibilities kept increasing. I went along with it because I was learning and I felt like it would help me advance. My instincts were correct, I was able to use the experience to show that I'd grown in the role, and that helped me negotiate a better salary.

I’ve noticed that certain responsibilities have shifted into others that were not originally there. It’s not so much adding on, just different. Do you feel like that is what’s happening, or are you just expected to do another job on top of yours? That would need a negotiation, because you are bringing a lot of value and money saved to them by doing that.

like

Absolutely! You can negotiate anything on a job. Doesn’t mean you will always get what you’re asking for, but sometimes you get more than what you had if you had not asked at all.

like

It depends on the responsibilities, and as others have said, are these all additional, or have some previous responsibilities transitioned away? (It's easy to forget about those!) Also be aware that as AI automates more and more parts of our roles, the human-centered parts of our jobs, like decision-making and interpersonal interactions, will become greater.

Definitely don't negotiate yourself out of a job during this age of AI! But also, if you role is legitimately growing, I think this is more than just a compensation negotiation, I think it's a promotion discussion. PARTICULARLY if you company have defined career levels (as mine does) and you can show that you're now operating at the next career level (like Associate to Sr. Associate, or Sr. Associate to Specialist).

Doing some career planning and wanted some advice. I have 4 years for project management experience in production and I just started PMing at an ad agency.

1.How long should I stay in this position before making my next move?
2. What should my next move be?! (Stay in the company and try to scale up or move on.)
3. Would getting my PMP at this point be helpful?

Reposting from HR bowl: I’ve heard there is a hiring boom, especially for L&D roles. I was let go recently from a toxic environment (removed the company from everything) after only 4 days of work. I’m actively job searching but not receiving ideal hits. I see a lot of senior level L&D roles but not as many for specialist roles, specifically in tech. I have 5.5 years of experience. Any advice for me? I’m also seeking therapy for the trauma & coping, now ready for securing that next role!

After you moved in-house, how did you get more comfortable reviewing contracts or counseling on issues you weren’t super familiar with? I was very specialized at my law firm and took a similarly specialized role in-house….but I still get requests to mark-up types of agreements that I never touched at my firm. I’ve been trying to find CLEs to get up to speed, but I’m wondering if this is generally something that gets more comfortable with time…
