Fun if you like drinking and your coworkers, not fun otherwise so your mileage may vary.
Personally i enjoy because i like drinking and my coworkers
Agree with this.
Unless, as was my case, a matter blew up and I took criticism from the firm for working on my matter and my client for not being as available as I usually was.
Thinking on this more, it would be important to ask what your partners are hoping to gain from this retreat. Since they asked the associates (given your posting title) if you’re interested in a retreat, it sounds like they are just trying to find a way to boost your morale and camaraderie. If my suspicions are correct, this means they have a line item budget of funds for y’all to play with. So, get this line item delegated to an associates committee with your fellow associates and decide together the funnest way to spend it. Is that locally going to a profesional sports event? Is that going on retreat? Is that bringing in Bryan Garner for a writing tutorial? Spend that money how you all want it.
Agreed with Attorney 1–fun if you like socializing with coworkers, not so fun if you have a family and would rather be home.
I thought we'd be expected to somehow wedge full time work into the retreat week, but instead everyone took it easy. All expenses paid, nice location, free drinks. Easy enough to show face then slip away for the less social. I was a fan but could see it being challenging for anyone trying to refrain from drinking.
If the retreat has a spa so I can spend all day at the spa on employers dime. Otherwise it’s just time I’m forced to spend away from my family, especially when it’s in a weekend. So there’s pros and cons
My wife went to one where they put caps on all the good stuff. The spa was full before it even got through equity partners. Golf was full by the end of the partner sign up session. Directors had some random options like a reservation for the tennis court that never needed reservations. Managers and below got shoved into nature hikes as the only thing without caps.
Our retreat is just a day at a nice local location (like a lakefront venue), with a four hour-ish program with presentations from various parts of the firm (historical stories from the firm’s beginning, state of finances, what practice groups are up to / how they started), and then we go to a catered party at a partner’s house after. It’s nice.
Sounds like a nightmare tbh. They want you to spend even more time with work people and not your actually friends and family? Hard pass.
