Try to give your employer the benefit of the doubt and think through other potential reasons he is paid more: did he do additional projects, is he working on similar but more complex issues, maybe he negotiated harder during hiring or promotion time. Depending on what you find out build your case and go to your boss to ask for the raise. I have female friends who went to their boss and told them they know their male counterpart is making X, and listed off everything they are doing better than that counterpart. And gotten a raise shortly after.

A male counterpart was making more than I was despite having more YOE and a higher performance rating. I found out about this when that same counterpart reported to me after getting promoted. Needless to say, my manager had some explaining to do (…something about him negotiating during hiring). My manager made it up through a bonus top up and ensured my salary is reflective of the value and results I bring to the company. I’ve definitely made it clear that I value pay equity (and expect senior leaders to apply this judgment without having to ask for it every time). This is something I consider when I hire new people to ensure fairness on my existing team members.
