I have! Prior to breaking into the field, I met a mentor through an internship, and she genuinely wanted to help me develop the tools I needed to succeed. She wasn't just nice or supportive, she taught me valuable skills and helped me improve my weaknesses.
Teach skills 🫡 will do!
I’ve had a few.
The best were - 1) available when I reached out, 2) had gotten where I wanted to go and 3) were honest.
1. One of my favorite people said AND DID what he said - when someone calls/messages you for help, STOP what you’re doing and listen to them.
2. I’ve had many mentors but the BEST ones had made it to the top of the hill I was trying to climb. That doesn’t just apply to career progression but the little things, like just managing stress, having an executive presence while their world was crumbling, keeping boundaries for family time, clear and concise communication styles. They people that are where you want to go a) have the chest codes b) most likely didn’t start their and have empathy with others trying to become their peers.
3. Honesty to me means telling me the hard truths. One of my mentors would give me on the spot critical feedback and he did so I can work on it. He was awesome on checking in on my progress too.
Thank you for such a thoughtful response! I will keep these all close to heart as I start managing 🫶
My first mentor was at a local shop. I was in accounts then. He was the strategist on the account I was managing. I showed an interest in strategy and he nurtured it.
He just talked to me about it. Gave me the history of ad strategy and the tools to become a successful strategist before I even made the career switch. He took a genuine interest in my learning, giving me tons of literature and ORGANIZED each piece by importance. It really felt like some Good Will Hunting shit, the way he did everything he could to make me feel like I had a chance to be a successful strategist.
I’m not saying mentors need to do all of these things, but genuinely giving a shit about their growth, always leaving your door open, and striving to inspire your mentees I think will leave a fond and lasting impression on them.
When I get a big win now, he’s the first person I think of because he really sparked a passion for this work in me.
I should really give him a call…
Sounds like an incredible mentor! I hope I can emulate him!
My old CMO took me under her wing pretty early on. She would allow me to sit in on strategy meetings and others that I was definitely an outsider. But sitting in on those formed me into the manager I am today.
That’s a great idea!
