Yes - I transferred them to Alaska and booked JFK to HKG in Cathay First and HKG to ICN / TPE in Cathay Biz (no additional miles). Cost me 70K points one way, but with the 5K miles (not points, but actual miles with the airline) bonus every 60K points, it was a steal.

Oh totally OP. Quality of first / biz varies drastically by airline - it’s horrendous to be on United / Delta / American when you’ve been on Cathay / Singapore / Lufthansa / Swiss / etc.
Yeah I think redeeming for jal for Cathay first is totally worth it.
It’s not a great use of points.
- TPG quotes Marriott points as being worth 9cpp. I usually use 1cpp as my threshold for redeeming vs paying cash. I just redeemed a ski villa in Park City at 1.4cpp.
- United gives 3:1.1 transfer, so you’d need 190k Bonvoys for a 70k UA biz one way to Europe. That $1,900. You’d be better transferring points from Chase or using UA miles, which are valued at 1.5-1.6cpp for a cost of $1,100
Exactly what OP said, with an additional possibility / consideration - in the earlier example I used, you can transfer to Alaska and book Cathay (and JAL, for that matter). Chase UR doesn’t transfer to those, and moving AMEX points to Asia Miles (Cathay’s program) doesn’t net out as advantageous, since they charge more than Alaska does for the same route.
So, for that option, Bonvoy to Alaska is the best deal. The Points Guy has a long article about all this btw - I take no credit for the find, as it really comes from him haha.
