Have you ever retroactively negotiated salary? I ask because I have a family member who didn’t know to negotiate salary and just accepted what HR offered her. She later discovered she is among the least paid on her team, despite having more experience than most. Could she go back and request a reconsideration?

It would be very difficult to do that. The best case they could start putting together a reason for a review early on. It is a lesson most of us learn the hard way.

I haven’t heard of anyone doing that successfully personally

She could try. But it's unlikely.

Once a person leaves the negotiating table, they become a statistic on a pay scale that needs processing for the company's benefit, not the individual's.

Companies generally pay to get you, but do not pay to keep you. Therefore, she might consider looking for work elsewhere.

I am not sure who needs to hear this but exactly one year ago, I was at my lowest point in life. Today, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Life has truly been a rollercoaster these past few years for me.

I am sharing this to tell you that no matter what you’re feeling right now, it won’t last. Even the happiness I feel right now, I’ve had that stripped from me multiple times. That is LIFE. We have the good and the bad.

Hang in there if times are bad. If things are good, prepare to lose it too.

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
