Yes, reading levels are much lower than they should be. However, I cannot adjust the levels of the texts for any texts that don't have alternatives or options listed in the curriculum. Instead, I adjust the amount/type of support provided while we read the texts.
It’s definitely a problem. We’re giving more supports, but also adjusting texts.
I think a lot of it has to do with switching the way we teach reading in lower grades. Phonics was a pain but it improved reading skills. I think that some schools are returning to it partly but at least here in Georgia we still mostly use sight words and chunking which have been proven in studies not to be as effective.
Yes, I have! Also, if we improve students reading levels by one or two grades, they will still be below the grade point average. Indiana's standardized test scores for students who passed the Math and Language Arts Section were shockingly low after a whole semester of online schooling last year.
Right now I am using getepic books because I can assign a reading level for my students. I just asked my principal can he renew Education Galaxy because if a student is low through that program you can assign the students to Liftoff. Also, I asked him to purchase a program called “Let’s go Learn” I have used this program in the past an it’s an excellent program because once the student takes the assessment, the program tailor makes a program especially for that student and it shows the progress the student is making. Right now we use a program called IStation and I hate it because you can’t adjust the reading level for the students. I bought this to the principal’s attention. I hate it when a district buys programs that are useless because they don’t work all because a friend of a board member recommended it.
I think part of this is due to extended e-learning.
