Technically, if you are rich enough, isn’t self-insurance the best option? Insurance companies have to make money by taking in more in premiums than paying out in claims, so on average the customer is losing money and has a negative (albeit stable) NPV on their insurance money. But if you had enough money to tolerate the risk of a unexpectedly high expense, wouldn’t it be better to not pay for the insurance?

The firm asked me and another senior associate to take the first year out to lunch on her first day. Sure no prob.
