Heavy topic for a Friday night, but I recently joined a front office role and feel out of place only because of my Indian accent. I feel like I don’t fit in and got the job out of sheer luck.

I can assure you that in this highly competitive environment for talent, you definitely got the job because you were the best candidate for it. Have confidence in what you bring to the table and let that guide how much you crush it in the role. You got this.

likeuplifting

You were hired for a reason and its never because they thought you were lucky. Be confident in yourself! Your accent doesn’t take away from your intelligence and what you have to offer. They clearly thought you were brilliant and deserving of the role.

like

Bruh, I’m Indian and I’ve used my “indianness” to form some beautiful connections with folks. Own it, you can use it to interact with people from your own country & that’s helped me build confidence to talk to others.

like

You will do great. There is no shame in having an accent. You were the best for the job . Keep your head up .

This industry is one of the most competetive industries to date. I assure you, no amount of sheer luck would've gotten you to where you are now. You got in because they saw something in you that they knew would be valuable to the company. Your accent cannot diminish your skils and intelligence. You are deserving of the position you are in.

like

It is normal to feel like that on the first days. Once you start meeting more people and realizing that they don't care about your accent and that everybody has an accent, then you will stop worrying.

like

I do feel like that sometimes because I tend to compare myself to my co-workers and that I only got the job out of luck as well. But I do remember how high my company's standards are and that they hired me so that makes me feel a little good about myself.

like

Oh man, imposter syndrome is REAL. Almost everyone experienced it at some point. But I can tell you that no one would undermine your skills because of your accent - if they do, it's their own issues they need to deal with, it's not yours. Don't give yourself excuses to put yourself down!

like

Why would you say you are hired because of luck. Besides, someone's success is not dependent on their accent but their skills and competency. Doesn't matter if you have an accent. What's important is you can speak the language that everyone can understand.

like

Don't think too much about that. You were hired because of your skills and competency. You are still adjusting so it's normal if you feel that way at the moment.

About how long does it take to hear back from HR after an interview? Specifically - if you got the job or not? The HR contact has reached out to me several times reassuring me they are interested in me for the role, but they are still in the process of interviewing others. I had several interviews with people at this company. It’s been a little over 2 weeks since my last interview. Is this normal?

All tricky situation - recently shifted from S&O into a technical product manager role in the AWS ML division, but went through McKinsey rounds in parallel too for an Associate position. Always been a dream to work at McKinsey, but I’ve longed for product management too. I’d like a two year stint at McK, but I’d want to come back to product in tech. If McK agrees to a start in 2022 Jan, do you think 1) it’s worth it for 2 yrs; leaving a lot of money on table 2) can I exit back to product easily?

Asking for advice please. I’m making 57k as a Finance Coordinator (2 yrs). My work is a hybrid role: 1) Exec assistant for a C-Level exec, 2) Financial Analyst. I cannot become Analyst now due to an on-going visa application that is going to take about 1-1.5 years. I am very grateful that my company is willing to help me with my visa (around 10k) this year. But I am thinking about asking for 70-75k since living cost in LA is pretty high and sometimes my bank account can be negative. What to do?

At this moment, I am almost depressed. I am in a relationship with this guy for 2 years now. In the past 2 years, we have fought more than we have lived days with peace. We both have high ego problems because of which it’s really hard to resolve a conflict. Things have recently escalated to calling names/swearing and even physically abuse from both sides. We both want to end the relationship, have tried so many times, but we cannot.

Hi All,
I have been staffed on a non-analytics related engagement for the next 2 months. It’s really mundane and allows me to have 3-4 hours a day for myself. I wanted to pick up a side project on my own where I can work with a “dirty” dataset, practice python scripting for data manipulation and also create visualisation out of it. Are there any websites that provide such projects? I know I can work with any open source dataset but wanted a defined problem like we expect from the clients.
