What’s buy-side comp like in Toronto/Canada?
Start first by not limiting yourself because your “not white” or “not male”. There is still issues like these in some workplaces but not as much as people would like to blame on this sort of thing. I can guarantee if you began a discussion in this way you would immediately lose any sort of real consideration about your concern. Take pride in your work ethic and what you provide for the company and ask from that position.
I’m not sure if you can approach it by saying “ I found out through my peers that I’m making X amount less than them.” But you could phrase it as your desire to do more and learn more and would that create an opportunity for an increase of some sort.
You could also ask if you could begin discussing a path to promote, provided you personally feel ready or almost ready.
But please don’t immediately kill your shot by assuming because of factors you can’t control that they will always be held against you. Your growth starts with you, that growth can’t even begin on solid ground when you begin the thought by immediately building yourself an additional obstacle that may not even be real in your situation.
Thank you all for your input.
I was bringing this question from knowing about the Equal Pay Act...
The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. Job content (not job titles) determines whether jobs are substantially equal.
There are some other acts also prohibiting compensation discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability.
Being in a work visa, do does laws not apply to me?
I understand the concept of the company investing by sponsoring me but after 3 years I'm just staying behind when it comes to salary increases bc my pay was below the market from day 1.
That said, I'll prob go with the performance and contributions route on my next chance to negotiate salary increase.
It's just sad feeling that you have to stand so many unfair situations like this bc they are sponsoring your visa 😔
Experience being severely underpaid while being a white male US citizen at a company that employed a ton of visa workers…I was able to bring it up and get brought up to the average. Visa workers were told they were lucky to be sponsored. Usually the visa workers were brought in around the same pay as everyone and then never given decent raises. I would assume the color and gender have nothing to do with it, I had women of color on visas new hire making more than me
Normally companies allow for this to be renegotiated once a year. Normally this is at the new business year when the yearly budget is approved.
If this is soon, I would be proactive, arrange a meeting and request that your salary be rebased to the rest of the team.
If the company doesn’t agree, sometimes the best way to rebase your salary is to switch jobs. Even though you’re on a visa you’ll likely find another company willing to help you with that.
So I suggest you ask for a “salary rebase.” You can use that wording because it shows that you feel you are under the base salary level.
They’re not obligated to pay you the same amount, because how much you earn is also based on your ability to negotiate.
Just mention to them that you have noticed your salary seems to be below the team’s baseline salary level and you’d like to rebase to their level.
If you want to negotiate above them, you could mention all the points where feel you are outperforming your team but normally your team should have a peer review process in place to rate where they think you are excelling or falling behind.
You will never get a raise if you don't consistently press the issue. Raises don't just come... You have to ask for them and even threaten to leave if you have to (or actually leave).
Honestly if you feel like your workload is more and your compensation is less you should ask to see if you can get your workload shifted or even ask for a promotion. If you need to discuss it internally don’t mention that you know, just focus on your skills and what you bring to the table and ask for a raise. Keep it simple, before your meeting you should also look for other opportunities.
From a business operations standpoint their decision around your salary may be justified as you’re on a work visa.
Sorry you’re experiencing this
Negotiate and ask your supervisor to bring your salary up. Argue that it may be perceived as discrimination especially if you are in the minority. If other minorities are paid well, then ask if you are not performing well enough to merit a fair salary, but if you do, make sure you exceed expectations this year
I would suggest that work to obtain your green card. This may come easier than citizenship considering you have a permanent position. Once you have that you won’t be tied to them for a position. In the meantime, does your company do annual reviews? If so, how have yours been? If not, I’d ask for a one-on-one meeting with your supervisor to discuss future goals. Be ready. Have a list of your accomplishments, responsibilities, including training and assistance you’ve given new hires.
