Any luck for US CPA in Canada?
Does anyone have any insight into accounting roles at Amazon, particularly in the Arlington/DC area? An Amazon recruiter reached out about accounting roles, but the posts in this bowl are about Seattle. Trying to decide if the culture/wlb/pay is even worth looking into since it sounds like the interview process is intense. Base pay seemed pretty low in other posts, but they were a year old and for Seattle.

No experience in accounting/finance department, but worked in infotainment software side for 4-5 years and career progression was a joke. No one leaves the damn company and things take so long to get done (big company problems) that progression is usually based on time, not experience. Not a bad place to work, they have great people, but something to keep in mind.
Culture- the company culture is kind of "generic progressive" if I had to put a label on it. We have some slogans and what not but they don't really differentiate GM from other big companies. I'd say each team within Finance has its own culture as well, which will vary based on who works there and what leaders are like. For example, I loved the team i used to work but find myself anxious for a shot to rotate out of my current one. I have worked with technical accounting before and everyone has been nice/professional but I don't have an inside scoop to that specific team.
WLB- If you're coming from public accounting it will generally be an improvement, but if from industry not sure. We have been remote since covid which has been awesome, and is a huge reason I haven't considered leaving. But there has recently been a kerfuffle around returning to the office 3 days a week that had created a lot of angst. Sounds like there might be some flex in the 3 day mandate based on the team ur in but not much is clear at this stage. So if permanent remote work is what you're targeting make sure you're employment status is "remote" and not "hybrid."
Career- Like any big company, to move up you're basically waiting on attrition. The company RARELY creates new roles, most especially lvl8+ (manager). But it's also rare to see manager roles go external, as we usually promote from within. A little surprised to see this role posted tbh. If you come in at 8, expect to stay there awhile. You would (probably) come in at 8C that would give you two promotions (8B and 8A) based mostly on time equity. After that your progression could be stalled as you wait for a lv9 role to open up. It's really hard to crack into lv8 roles, so 9 and above are that much harder. All that said, you will find this at most big industry companies, this stuff isn't really unique to GM.
Lvl8 does bring a company car which is nice, though you have to buy/lease a new GM vehicle every 4 years so it's not exactly "free and clear." Gas is paid for commuting to and from work location as well so that helps.
My 0.02- I have been here 6 years and generally like the company. Lots of good people here and I like being a part of the industry during what feels like the single largest change since the assembly line. I am also a progressive person so I like all the DEI initiatives the company takes on, but I recognize there are different opinions there. As someone with a young family, I'm carefully monitoring what the return to work stuff will do to my family life, though admittedly lots of companies and firms are shifting to a more hybrid approach so its not clear what fully remote options will be in the market in the future. Gotta love corporate overloards getting the peasants back in line, eh? But overall a good place to land for someone in SE Michigan, definitely looks good on a resume and always lots of change to spice things up.
