Help! I’m being made a partner at my small firm. I was told it would be effective June 1, and some benefits started then, but still no signed agreement or anything in writing. All other partners are currently out of the country on vacation. Yesterday I got an email from the payroll company informing me that I’m now going to be paid as a 1099? Is this normal to get a 1099 as a partner? I thought it would be a combo of w-2 and k-1? Im supposed to be getting 10% equity. Feeling clueless.

Has anyone received equity as contingency comp? I have a potential client with a founders dispute. He doesn’t have cash, and the other founder ripped him off and is now running the company. 3 attorney firm. I’ve been here for 6 years and have used Westlaw exclusively. Now we are switching to Lexis because apparently Westlaw is too expensive. I hate change. I know where everything is on Westlaw and now I need to relearn. Apparently Westlaw will not budge on price and would rather just see a client leave than work with them. Super annoying. Any insight on negotiating Westlaw or transitioning to lexis?

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.
