Helping a family member with an amended return for 2023. Since we are (obviously) past the April 15, 2024 due date, do I need to pay interest on said return? Everything I am reading on IRS website makes it sound like you can just mail in the correct amount that you owe with no penalty or interest.

You should include. Or don't and risk getting a notice for it 2 years from now when they finally process it.

If there’s a balance due on the amended return, the irs would assess p&i. If you don’t pay with the amended return, they’ll issue you a notice…but could be some time from now so honestly I’d just pay it now to stop it from accruing

Are you filing an amended return or a late return?

Depends on the amount owed and the reasoning for the amend
