I’d want more on critical thinking and storytelling like how to cut through noise with authentic messages. Also, hands-on skills in consumer psychology and behavioral insights are often missing but so key. Plus, grads should know how to collaborate across teams and adapt to fast changes, because marketing’s never just about campaigns, it’s about building real connections.
Easy, the deficits I see most young people coming into the workforce:

2. Work ethic

6. Attitude

I’m currently developing a new course. And yes, I’m teaching responsible AI by having in class exercises where we use it as a tool under my direction. I experimented with this last semester. Students felt AI helped with brainstorming but many preferred their ideas over AI. They discovered AI was faster, but not more creative.

No, I don’t teach that. “80-90% there” means you’ve figured out what you want and you’re now trying to prompt AI to read your mind. To get exactly what you want, human creativity takes over. I teach them to work through their ideas and complete them themselves. Some marketing settles for “good enough” machine output that lacks creativity. That’s what is hurting the industry in my opinion.
I think AB testing is seriously undertaught but frequently utilized!
