Living in Queens, you'll get the NYC as a cultural melting pot experience, instead of the expensive gentrified experience. And Roosevelt Ave has the best food

You will regret living in queens. You won’t get the “experience” you’re looking for living in queens.
I say UES! I don’t know much about Sunnyside so can’t speak to that. I used to work in midtown east and live in UES and LOVED it. Easy commute, affordable (look at Yorkville for good deals), close to the park, and just a cleaner/quieter vibe that the rest of Manhattan. So many fun neighborhood restaurants and accessible to great shopping and museums. Not a big party/bar scene, but you can always travel downtown for that.
UES all the way! Central Park, museums, amazing restaurants (the ones that survived). UES is also an established neighborhood so when the next major crisis happens in the city (every 10 years) you hopefully won’t be in a druggie homeless wasteland
Where are you moving from? I'd personally move to UES if you can afford. Sunnyside is a really nice neighborhood but the 7 train sucks on the weekends and whenever there's an event at citi field or the US open. Also as others are saying you are definately going to not get that NYC (manhatten) experience.
She would love if we ended up in LIC and I have some familiarity with the area but it’s really nice to hear all the good things about UES
Sunnyside has some really great restaurants and a great neighborhood feel. The commute into midtown is also super quick on the 7. However, if you’re looking for green space, Sunnyside is not it. There are no parks nearby, just cemeteries

I lived in Sunnyside for seven years. I can say confidently that I loved it because it gave me that sense of “removal” from the hustle of manhattan (where I worked). It was quiet and pretty peaceful. There’s enough stuff (bars, restaurants, groceries, laundromats, etc) so you feel like you’re part of a neighborhood.
I don’t think the 7 train sucked bad enough on weekends to warrant mentioning. Also, it’s amazing to live off the 7 because it links up with almost every train line.
Green space: not too much. There’s a tiny park or two, but when I was craving lush greenery, I’d take a walk in Sunnyside Gardens. Huge tree-lined streets and quaint houses with little pedestrian alleyways in between. It’s really nice.
I’d stick around the 46th St. stop off the 7, and stay north of Queens Blvd — the side streets are cute, lots of trees, and up by Skillman there’s some bars and restaurants.
Oh. One other thing: you’ll get way more space in Sunnyside. The apartments on the UES are generally hysterically tiny.
Plus. Midtown East is real easy to get to from the 7.
Another UES vote, at least for your first couple years. You’ll enjoy more of NYC, the food, museums, Central Park! And LIC is not difficult to get to from UES.
I lived in Sunnyside for a year and loved it (it was on the border of Sunnyside Gardens so it definitely felt “green”). It depends what you’re looking for - I’m from Queens so I’m biased. If you want more space and diversity, go for it. Though I think you may be looking for UES by your phrasing of “missing out on the NY experience”. Doesn’t sound like someone that would be happy here.
I appreciate this perspective. Where I currently live I’m in a neighborhood just outside of our downtown area and love that it has a neighborhood vibe but I can still get to downtown and more nightlife in minutes. NY is just so much larger and will be completely new to me so these first hand accounts are really helpful
I’d pick UES over Sunnyside any day of the week. Making friends is easier, so it won’t just be you and your SO every weekend hanging out. Food and drink spots I think are equal at both places, and you’ll have more time to enjoy them by being closer to work instead of spending daylight hours commuting back. Parks are definitely better in UES though! Just something to consider.

I live in queens and have been begging my SO to find a job in the city so we can move there instead. Right now queens is the epicenter of both our commutes. When living in queens you won’t really be enjoying the parks and stuff bc you will most likely come back when it’s dark out. Also on weekends you’ll most likely go out to the city instead. I like the neighborhood, everything is cheaper here, I find it generally safer than midtown right now (lol) but if you’ve got good cash flow and want to enjoy the NYC experience go UES!!
If you want affordable green space and calm but without the stinking 7 train, check out Roosevelt island. You’ll need to go to UES or LIC for eating out but being at home on the island is lovely. Peaceful but so convenient. I recommend the Riverwalk buildings right next to the subway.

UES. Lived there for years before moving to NJ for kids, schools. UES gives you central park and long walk or short train/bus to midtown. It is more expensive for everything, but if you want the city experience, it is worth it. Rent a car occasionally to go to LI or NJ shopping. Totally worth it.
