After being at Deloitte for a month, I'm slowly starting to figure out how things work and what the measures of success here are. However, can someone explain what "eminence" is from your perspective, and give me insight on how that's assessed? I've talked to my coach about this but still don't get it in practical terms - like what does eminence look like in a business case for promotion? Thanks!

Hi all! What are the differences between senior/staff SWE and software architects? Are architects still a thing? I'm causally searching for a new position (my job had a 50% layoff last month and the survivability of the company is sketchy) and I've noticed senior and staff SWE roles sound like they have a lot of architectural designing and leadership responsibilities while not focusing on coding as much. Is this normal? I love mentoring, but I also don't wanna be in meetings all day. 😕

I have to tell my parents that I got engaged this weekend. They haven’t been taking the coming out well over the last year (i.e have isolated themselves from their community, screaming and crying when I’m on the phone with mom, dad hasn’t spoken to me since July). I am a bi man married to a woman. Everyone assumes I'm straight. I've considered joining the LGBTQ+ affinity group at my firm but worry on two fronts. 1) I generally feel....(continued in comments)

What do you all do to make non-professional / personal connections? Particularly with the Coronavirus, and being in domestic relations, I wake up, go to work, work out, go home. So outside of law, my interactions with people are only at the gym given that my area is draining— particularly at the moment. Probably a good thing for now; but if we take coronavirus out of the equation, I’m interested what others in the community do to develop personal connections.

What should I be reading or researching? First gen lawyer here, always been small firm. I’m at a 2 attorney firm now and was just approached about becoming a partner. The boss wants to clean up the books so I can review them and we can discuss. Other than professional connections, I have no idea where to turn for info/insight. I’m definitely interested, but obviously this is a big decision, so I don’t think a “partner? Sure, I’m in” is appropriate.
