And mentally/emotionally/physically - expectations you’re supposed to be everywhere ,all at once, all hours of the day and performing well. 8636828 slack channels, poor resourcing, too-lean teams, back to back meetings, no time for real work, no time to integrate important meetings/conversations. And no one at the top realizing how problematic this is not just for the people, but for the business overall

We don’t live in a society that supports working moms.
When I was still in-house, while I was successful and had the titles, it would kill me to see other women in positions of influential leadership behaving in a way that was ruthless and diminishing to others (including women!). Leaders behaving in an un-leader-like manner to get nods/approvals/wins from other execs…playing the game a little too hard, if that makes sense.
The worst, most cutthroat, backstabbing, two-faced person in leadership I have ever encountered was another woman. Like, vicious. She was my CCO and it was legit a traumatic experience. To this day I have never encountered, let alone worked for, another person like this.
The lack of willingness to change legacy leadership (people, structures) is responsible for so much that goes wrong at my agency. We have “untouchable” people in high up roles who aren’t only not helping us advance as an agency, but are actively stunting progress. There’s little/no willingness to shake things up because we prioritize experience over *relevant* expertise. Clients get the shaft when we feel more loyalty to stale leaders than to our agency’s future success.
So good. What does shake things up mean to you? What do you feel like needs to fall off into the archaic abyss and what do you wish it was replaced by?
Since I am a young woman, people assume I only need enough money to cover half of a living situation at most and that I should have disposable income. No. I’m saving like my life depends on it lol.
A dual income household is taken for granted, which skews perception of who deserves/needs better pay and promotions. I may not have children right now. But I am hoping to have my first child in the next three years, and when that happens, I fully intend to be a stay-at-home mom. It’s something I’ve felt drawn to my whole life, and I want to be able to save up for that now. But promotions hinge on social cohesion, and coworkers don’t understand why I don’t buy drinks when I go out w them or why I skip the concerts they go to as a group. I’m not spending money I don’t have on social events if it’ll hold me back from my dreams. I hate the politics. Not making your work your whole life needs to be normalized. It needs to be acceptable that I do good work at work and let that qualify for a promotion. Extracurricular activities outside of work are just that: extra.
So many important probing questions!
Unsustainable leadership—in this climate for a while now, with so much anxiety and complexity around ramping up at the right pace with AI (industry eagerness at odds with client comfort) and how the administration has impacted the economy…
has resulted in kowtowing to clients vs trusting creative leads and teams to do what’s in the best interest of quality work, and has undermined recommendations and grounded expertise to appease clients that sign the checks (or threaten to go elsewhere), making leadership shortsightedness unsustainable.
Misalignment—expectations to just shut up, keep your head down, and do what your told…
Versus speaking up which “ causes trouble” and making thoughtful suggestions that will pressure leadership to respond proactively, but instead retribution may be the chosen form of action.
This dynamic impacts worker energy, with psychological and physical fallout.
It will make an employee check their work instincts and cause them to second guess priorities for job longevity over quality work.
No one outright mentions any rules. But the unspoken expectations to fall in line, and the vulnerabilities for those who don’t, are palpable.
Mmmm ok so this makes me wonder -
What does ideal and desirable leadership look like to you? What do you want to see, feel, and believe??
