At-will means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason, except an illegal one, or for no reason without incurring legal liability.
Likewise, an employee is free to leave a job at any time for any or no reason with no adverse legal consequences.
All US states except Montana, I believe.
M1 - you don't have a choice. It's mandated by state law, which allows that employment is at will by both the employer and the employee, and that either side is free to terminate employment with or without cause or reason at any given time.
‘At will’ also means that you can quit anytime without notice. Employers try to get 2 weeks notice but you are under no obligation. At will comes from labor laws around unions (whether something was a union shop or not the right to work and at will , Will all came out of this era.)
