Hi All, I am a Product Manager in a Canadian Financial Services company and my total compensation is close to ~140K CAD considering all benefits of being a Full Time Employee. I try to study more on the product space. But sometime I feel many IT colleagues including my closed ones do not understand what a Product Manager does. Sometimes I feel a little low when I hear them saying if it doesn’t require coding it’s all easy.
I know it’s not easy. Anyone in the same situation?

I found this was the case when I took up my first product role. In the beginning I tried to explain my role to them, then I stopped. Because if they understood what I did then it was not something major, but if they didn't understand it I would get upset and it impacted just me.

What I focused on is to do the best in my role and made sure that the people I worked with directly (development and business both) saw the value I got to the table. Once they understood my value and my role, it brought respect for my role with that understanding. And as time passed, the respect was seen by others that previously made comments on my role.

I learnt a very important lesson then, that I only need to make sure I am doing my role well and to the best of my ability, everything eventually falls in place. And if it doesn't, because the people around you are toxic, it's time to move on.

Hold your head high, and do your best. The rest don't matter, they will see your value sooner than later. ♥️

Yeah, I feel like that is a general personality trait all IT people have lol...I wouldn't take it personally. Keep on doing you and if they don't care, their loss!

I see what you mean. Very relatable.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts .

Don't let anyone belittle or invalidate your experience. You know that you work hard and I'm sure if they were in your shoes then their perspective would change.

Thanks for the encouragement. Appreciate it.
😇 trying to stay strong

The product engineers at my company are the same way. They think that I don't do anything except tell them what to do, when I'm actually drowning in work myself.

I know this feeling. I remember a friend once said being a Product Manager is all about talking in meetings and managing Confluence. I was so surprised 😯.
We know the real struggle.

All I try to do is to stop explaining these days.

I see this most frequently with the sales team since I’m in B2B SaaS and Sales always wants new features to make a sale. Whenever they get so frustrated that they could do it better and move into the Product team, they crash and burn because they see how hard the job is.

Is our industry as competitive as some say? I see a lot of people saying this and I work with a bunch of hacks (myself included). It felt like a little while ago agencies were begging to hire new talent, and most couldn’t find new people. Is it really that hard to get a job at an agency? Maybe I’m just out of touch being in this career for so long.

NDAs - signed my first one as a part of a severance agreement. thinking about leaving an honest review for this company, but unsure about the liabilities that come with this. (NDA mentioned no defamation) leaning on the side of letting it go, but this employer sucked BAD and i want others to know. ik its hard to give a straight answer bc it depends on the agreement, but wheres the line between bad mouthing vs your honest experience?
