Marketing is a very tough gig to get without experience these days. I've had 25 years in the industry as both a marketing copywriter and creative director. There have been tons of layoffs in the industry over the past 2 years, with more to come. Many companies are using AI and letting their marketing people go, which is what happened to the entire team I worked with. I think your best option is Event Planning. You can find that type of work as the Head of Catering at big hotels:
Example: The Head of Catering role at Humphreys (often linked with Humphreys Half Moon Inn (Bartell Hotels in San Diego), involves overseeing food and beverage, managing high-volume events, and maintaining high service standards for waterfront dining.
The position generally requires experience in hotel catering, sales, and staff management to ensure smooth, profitable operations.
Key Responsibilities & Qualifications...
Event Management: Planning and executing catering for weddings, concerts, and corporate events.
Sales & Operations: Managing catering sales, including menu planning, pricing, and client relations.
Leadership: Directing catering staff, coordinating with kitchen personnel, and managing inventory.
Hospitality Focus: Ensuring high-quality service, often in a resort environment.
Based on data from the San Diego area, a senior catering role at a venue similar to Humphreys Half Moon Inn—such as a Director of Catering or high-level Catering Manager—typically pays between $66,000 and $145,000 per year, with median total compensation often around $80,000 to $114,000 annually when including base salary and additional pay (bonuses / commission).
This is really helpful information! Thank you so much for your response! I've been leaning more toward the event planning space quite honestly, so this gives me some hope
