Email him. If he forwards the email, it will be looked at but be sure he thought highly of you. I would also ask to talk to him about the position as that is a good way of getting in his good graces.

I would email the partner and say something like:
“hey hope you’re doing well! [insert dumb joke about your difficult transaction so he is reminded how he knows you]. I’ve been interested in moving to [local area] because [reasons]. I noticed your firm has an opening for [x practice group] associate. I am a [#] year in [x practice group] currently. Do you think your firm would consider me for this position? [add something about how impressed you were with their firm’s expertise and responsiveness and whatever else on your transaction]. I would love to get your thoughts on transitioning to [local area] and which firms I should consider as a [x practice group] associate, if you’d be willing to spare a few minutes.”
That way if they’d be open to you for this position, great, and regardless, if he speaks to you, you still get his thoughts on the market and network a bit.
If he’s willing to talk to you, treat it like an interview.
Thank you so much! I don’t know how he thinks of me. Their work was pretty simple but his firm is our go to counsel for that state. I definitely will reach out to him!
I’d email the partner and let them know you saw the listing and ask if they’d consider someone with your level of experience. That way, they can give you a quick yes/no (you’re not asking them to do too much labor) and if they answer “yes” and like the idea of hiring you, they can tip off HR and let them know to keep an eye out for your application.

Would not assume this! HR can be such a void, even the best qualified candidates do not make it out of there without a poke from an attorney who works there sometimes.
