Hi ladies - I was looking for some advice. I recently moved countries to join a well-reputed consulting firm (level below manager - this is an old username). I come from a non-consulting background. Going through onboarding I realized a lot of new joiners junior to me come with consulting experience. I’m impressed and intimidated at the same time. I’m afraid of being pushed around/not taken seriously by them on new projects but also want to learn without letting my ego get in the way. Any tips?

I wouldn't think too much of it honestly. The firm that hired you clearly saw that you'd be a great fit for the position, regardless of whether you have consulting experience or not. Just try not to bring much attention to it and show them you can do your job great, even without the consulting experience. You got this!

Just remember that whomever hired you knew that you had your experience and they still hired you. So try not to create too much of a story around that and try not to give it too much power. Starting a new job is hard so just take it one day at a time (I am literally doing that right now and I am still crying pretty much everyday)

First, remember what "consulting" is and what it requires. It isn't really a skill, but an activity that requires experience (work and life), intelligence, common sense, an ability to research and gather facts, and how to convert all of those facts into usable information your client can apply to their circumstances. Dear heart, you have probably been "consulting" for many years but never called it that. Believe in yourself. Know what you know and play to your strengths. If you hit a few hiccups in your "getting to know you" phase, don't worry about it. Everyone does. Be open to advice, ask questions when necessary, and do the best job you can. This company knew what you had to offer them and apparently that is what they wanted. Don't let anybody intimidate you. You are the best you there is.

You were hired for a reason! In my experience, consultants have skills but don’t necessarily have expertise. You were hired for expertise
