Billing is easy, collecting can be hard especially if client racks up a large bill
I'd ask why. I've done family law for 17 years. Billing is easy finding clients with high retainers is not. In a sense it's easier at a big firm depending on income goals. But it's definitely emotionally exhausting.
I’m currently looking to transition to family law and it’s a difficult field to find a job in without previous family law experience. I’ve heard it can be an emotionally draining experience though and that the hours are long. One of those you gotta have the passion for it areas of law.
So, I just switched from ID to fam law. The billables are way more reasonable and the pay is more competitive. That being said, billing is still tedious, and you have to deal with emotional clients questioning their bills and not always being happy with outcomes.
As an example my last ID job was 2100 hours a year for $75k. My job now is way less billables with almost large raise.
My first job was 1800 for $60k... current is 1500 for $150k... also yes other attorneys are worse than clients
Some small firms (like where I work) don’t have minimums at all. It’s easy to bill and there is always work, but like others have said, collecting can be an issue. It can be extremely emotionally draining because you’re going to be a litigator and pseudo-therapist all in one. In my experience, other attorneys are almost worst than the clients - they can get really personally invested to the point of being uncivil and unethical.
I’ve done the transition and haven’t had an issue thus far.
We usually see a 1650 ish range for billables, though good quality boutiques tend to focus on 'QOS' rather than billing fests.
