Hot take for the day: If you have not logged a few years actually practicing with a firm or government attorneys office(I.e went in house immediately or almost immediately), you are not a real attorney and likely have zero grasp on what you are actually doing.

Junior who went in house quickly here.

All the worst attorneys I’ve met have been firm attorneys tbh, and I’d argue the percentage of bad attorneys is much higher at firms than in house. Firm attorneys also don’t see all the time in house counsel spends correcting their work (yes, even from the top firms).

You might only be seeing half the picture. Sometimes I’m thrown into a subject matter I’m not familiar with and need to figure it out on the fly without outside counsel help (risk isn’t worth the cost). So to an SME, it might seem like I don’t know what I’m doing. But the SME also would have no idea how to do 99% of my job, let alone the areas I have expertise in.

A3: I certainly agree with you that some in house attorneys are idiots. Just like some firm attorneys are idiots. I’ve definitely dealt with idiots on both sides. My primary point is to disagree with OP’s assertion that any attorney without several years of firm experience is incompetent.

Signature pages are supes critical for being a “real attorney”

likefunny

If someone spends years in a firm and only handles signature pages they were probably hopeless to begin with

like

Categorically incorrect take. But, you do get diverse perspectives from different jobs that can help you see things from other perspectives you may not be able to see the issue from the right lens if you've always been in house.

like

Meh. Disagree.

like

Too much variability in experiences to agree 100% but I generally think this is true

like

Right, your highness, and how many years would one have to stay in firm or government practice before going in-house to be considered a "real attorney". Maybe you should write a book.

likefunny

Are you perhaps conflating litigator with attorney lol

Who hurt you.

likefunny

I bet depends on area of practice. But for compliance issues, you could learn a lot without being in a firm (though I can’t imagine how much harder it would have been without westlaw/lexis in my early years).

like

Only a real attorney can say that, and you are not a real attorney. 😉

likefunny

Sounds like they just took their first depo.

funny

Sounds like you’ve got 3-4 years under your belt, and I agree that you too are not a real attorney.

I’m assigned counsel in the family court. Contractor for a government agency. Sometimes it feels like practicing law. Sometimes I worry it’s too maury povich/jerry springer. Hope this gets that cute little chip off your shoulder lol

like

I’m saying that the Court system is not always where “real law” happens. A lot of BS happens there too.

They may not be litigators but they are still attorneys with a different skill set. No need to diminish their choices or work.

like

True.

lol

I fired a 200+ attorney firm because the partner I was dealing with was an idiot. He also was not providing good value for the fees he was billing. He did make a lot of rain at his firm because he had the right golfing buddies.

But he was a real attorney, despite having associates do all the legal work for him.

I’m junior to two Legal Counsel (I work in-house) who are passive aggressive towards each other. They don’t attend each other’s meetings and leave each other out of email CC’s. It’s pretty clear this is done on purpose as one of them has bitched to me about the other.
