How common is it to not have a dedicated partner as a junior in a fairly typical small US advertising agency? In working on 5+ accounts, I have 5+ partners in a given week (across different levels of seniority). It makes true collaboration and exploration really difficult. I feel it stunting my growth. It’s a hard thing to bring up because we’re a small place with no other juniors and I don’t want to raise any alarm. Any insight or advice?

Reframe this as opportunity: only junior on 5 accounts? Turn volume into velocity. You’re collaborating already at an exponential level. Explore in the time you have and the time you make. You’re in the catbird seat; use it to your advantage. You’re looking at this as a constraint when it’s a catalyst.

Thanks CD3. It’s also tough because the job market is bleh and the agency does have some great qualities (good people, good perks, hybrid schedule). But yeah, I know the potential is huge if I could find a dedicated partner that I work well with.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Sometimes you can be put with a partner that doesn’t mentally jive with you and you’re stuck. What you can do is work out who or what type of partner gets you and helps prop you up together. I’ve been paired with art partners that looked at me like I was from outer space when I mention ideas, and mine always got through. Don’t feel married to any of them. If they don’t understand your idea, just present it anyway, and don’t feel guilty. It’s their loss, not yours.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it’s not an awful thing. It’s nice to work with different people, and I’ve learned how to work better with different people. It’s just the working with multiple partners and trying to line up times to really talk things out and marinate on things, it’s just not there.

I had the same thing at my first agency, also really small and really scrappy. it was cool to touch lots of pieces of business and learn from all different kinds of ADs. I did ask my resource manager at some point if i could work on recurring weekly social briefs with one partner or work on open briefs or pitches with the same one, and that was really helpful for learning how to concept together/build trust/communicate etc.

ive been working on the same account now for 2 years and i kinda miss the pace of a smaller agency

Yeah, I do enjoy touching multiple accounts. It can be fun, but it’s also tough switching gears that many times in a week. I’ve asked to work with one of the newer ADs a little more and now we’re actually working together less. But still, I might bring it up again.

I’d kill to work with more experienced ADs than me. You’ll likely get more responsibility and growth from the experience. I had a partner that was very green once and we never got a chance to work on anything remotely challenging. Sucked the life out of me.

And it’s not lost on me that a junior-junior partnership has its own pitfalls. I would say it’s on the agency to give those teams chances at the bigger, more exciting work. I’m sure many do not, but i bet those that do and up with better work and stronger youngins
