How did you get started with excel? Was it for a class, a work assignment, personal interest? The first time I remember using excel was for an analytical chemistry class. We were doing linear regression. Then I used it somewhat sporadically until I started consulting, where I had to get very good very fast. I would often be put in front of clients, building solutions in real time in a workshop. After a few embarrassing mistakes, I started dedicating a lot of time to honing my craft.

Maybe I'm giving away my age here, but I'm pretty sure it was in middle school.

Started using on intermediate to advanced level during my work at construction site. Since then haven’t looked back and been using it on daily basis. Fast forward 5 years and today the job I have is due to that excel expertise and I have side hustle in which I teach excel and word online making extra money every month.

I started on one platform as IC, on. Varsity Tutors and now listing on Superprof, and also getting students through referrals. To supplement and keep presence I also teach math.

Having my team at work stand over me to watch me scared me into mastering it quick…. Now I’m advanced level

Fear is a great motivator

High school. Doing some analysis to make a chart for my international business class.

It’s sad that, as a players lawyer, my ability to work with excel is a big plus point. Even worse, as a sales analyst in CPG (vendor team to Walmart!!) ability to use functions in excel made me a demi god.

Is not that complex. It’s just a fancy logical calculator.

It’s crazy how intimidating it is to some people. Even crazier how many people are happy just knowing enough to get by with simple tasks when a little more digging would make their lives/jobs so much easier.

I learned it in 2019 as a planning assistant at Garan! I had to learn how to make reports from scratch and work on ladder plans for Walmart. It ended up being useful when I switched to Justice in 2020 and had to write up selling plans for its soft launch my first week. 🤗🤗

Excel is a great transferable skill to have!

I self-taught in late elementary school by just opening it up and playing around with it. Used it a little in middle school to make graphs for my homework before realizing there are better tools to use for most tasks other than 2D arrays

smart

Late elementary?! That’s insane.

It was at work

I was lucky enough to have an advanced Excel person teach me at my first big girl job. I got really into it and learned a lot on my own. Now I’m very proficient but still learning something new every day.

Hello!

I am being tapped to translate documents at work. I’ve done spot translation audits, and 1 larger Quality assurance document earlier this year, but was recently contacted about a potential large-scale translation initiative for next year.

Has anyone been compensated for these sorts of projects that would be “out of scope” for their role? How do you go about asking for compensation? Have any of you spun out and created translation service side-gigs?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

My client wants both parties to list assets & liabilities as an exhibit to their prenup without values, but waive the right to know the actual valuation of those in the prenup itself. My initial thought is this is a terrible idea & would probably make the prenup easily voidable since a main requirement for a prenup is for both to understand the nature and value of the other’s assets. I will research in my jurisdiction to confirm, but has anyone ever heard of/done this? Thoughts?
