We have had districts that are low on funds, so they choose to let teachers go before their 4th contract (finishing 3 years and getting your 4th year contract puts you under tenured contract rules) and hire new teachers under the 1st step on the salary schedule. It saves them money.
There are teacher shortages across the country; this will hurt the district in the end.

How long have you been teaching?
In my district after four years of employment, and only if you received consistently positive performance ratings are you’re eligible for tenure.
In the state of Mississippi, 8 years will give you tenure. It’s doesn’t matter if you’re a custodian, bus driver or teacher.
It takes a full three years to earn tenure. I can’t think of anyone who was hired in a contracted position who did not reach tenure.
I'm in a charter school as well as an AT-Work State so I have tenured light after 5 years ie I can't be dismissed but they can choose not to renew my contract.
Yes, tenure is a misnomer. We have due process in CA after two years typically, unless you are a temp teacher. Takes two years of probationary service, basically. If you are a temporary teacher and you serve three years, let's say, then you get a probationary contract, the last year of temp service counts and after that year you will be a permanent employee. The word "tenure" implies that a teacher can't be fired, which we know is not true.
