Network, conferences, webinars. In slow times it’s often who you know. If you’re at a firm, focus on business development efforts.
I think I will attend more conferences next year
Are you employed? Answer varies based on that. If employed, I take more random reach outs (vendors, free conference invites, etc). So yep network like your life depends on it if you think your current role is slow or unstable. If all is well at work, take deep breathes and enjoy the lull while still doing these things. The market and degree of busy will vary year to year but it comes back. Just don’t be on the “needs improvement” employee list while we wait for market recovery.
Thanks, yea I am employed now but thinking about a move
Catch up with people, former colleagues, anyone. Slow years are the time to make friends.
Add this to my to do list now
You could always learn family law. It can be miserable but it’s pretty recession-proof.
Sounds a good plan. But I have been in corporate law for over 10 years now, hard to switch areas
If any recruiters do reach out, listen to them even if you’re not interested and ask that you stay on their radar. I’m in a niche field, but I’ve had more recruiters reach out this year than I have since I entered practice.
If you’re interested in going in-house, it may be a good time to explore that. In-house hiring (at least in my market/practice area) has picked up with the market changes. More companies are looking to internalize work that was previously sent externally — my company alone has created four new attorney positions in the last year or so.
Can you pass on my information here to any recruiters that may reach out to you. I had two years experience as a paralegal in personal injury, with some criminal cases. Plus eight years working as a license Community Association Manager with many transferable skills. I’m open minded, but very interested in immigration and intellectual Paralegal.
