It needs to be worth people’s time to participate. It takes work to sign up and compete for something and then you likely have to give away your information.
It can be great if done well. But it has to be meaningful and the participants have to feel they are getting some value or it will fail.

You're in a desert, walking along in the sand (it doesn’t make any difference what desert—it's completely hypothetical).
When all of a sudden you look down and see a tortoise. (Sort of like a turtle—same thing.) It's crawling towards you.
You reach down and flip the tortoise over on its back, OP?!
The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over. But it can't. Not without your help.
But you're not helping. Why is that, OP?
A basic engagement mechanic isn’t a “trend.” Problem is a lot of creative teams only care about novelty with an awards-over-effectiveness mindset, so there’s a tendency to chase the new shiny object vs things we know work really well (eg, gamification). It’s such a broad concept, it can be approached in countless ways.
