If they expect overtime without pay, they’re not investing in you, they’re using you. Period. You can’t build a sustainable career on guilt. I’ve progressed faster because I protected my time and energy. Set limits, and when you break them, make sure there’s a damn good reason.
Yes, completely agree with this! You definitely need to keep an eye on this balance otherwise it ends up affecting your mental health- in your personal life but also your working life. The overtime isn’t worth it unless you feel like you can cope, but all overtime should be paid regardless!
Struggling with this too — this industry can make boundaries feel like a luxury. I try to remind myself that protecting my time isn’t laziness, it’s sustainability. I’ll go above and beyond when it really counts, but I won’t make a habit of unpaid overtime because at the end of the day, your time is your own money.
This is how I feel too! I’m more than happy to go above and beyond at times but when it reaches into my free time, that’s where it starts grating. Everyone needs their own time at the end of the day.
Kristin Bell put it perfectly, “There is no balance. It’s pivot fatigue for life”
I don’t think it has to sound that negative, but I believe it’s true. I’m 40 and I know NO ONE who has figured out “balance”. Not in today’s world.
That’s so sad though, don’t know why people put so much pressure on themselves in work scenarios.
