How do you handle a PM who won't stop creeping the scope after sign-off? Seriously, every single sprint it’s the same story. We agree on the goals, lock it in, and then a few days later it's "just one more small thing." Except that "small thing" completely blows up the architecture and wrecks our timeline. How do you guys manage PMs who do this without completely destroying the working relationship?

Sounds like the PM needs to get sent (back) to agile training.

The team agreed on taking on X story points. That involves the work as described on the tasks.

Even if it's 5 minutes after the sprint started, if it's extra work, then either this stuff that wasn't mentioned before isn't going to get done or something else that's a comparable amount of story points should be pulled off the sprint.

That kind of feedback is what I and my teams have given over the years where I've experienced similar POs / PMs. It can be awkward at times, making it seem as if the team doesn't want to do the work, but it's either that or essentially keeping enabling bad behavior.

Also, keep this stuff in mind if you ever have a post-mortem on a project. If there are ever any "why were these milestones missed?" questions then this could be used as an argument, especially if any additional information is documented on Jira tasks after the fact.

Ask for trade offs.

“That’s x points. Which item on the sprint can deprioritize/move out to next sprint?”

Alternatively, if it changes things and it can’t be done…”that’s out of scope, but we can task that change out for next sprint.”

And since you’ve said it keeps happening…why? Any particular trends? Is the PM getting last minute changes from someone else? Personally, I push back on behalf of devs often. And I try as much as possible to sync up on goals early and often.

Well done Government 👏

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?
