I think this is infinitely more common than most people talk about. HR knows that people need time to look for work and being out of work while you're actively searching doesn't mean you're lazy or unskilled. If you do contract work for money, I think that's fine, but don't do it just because of the employment gap.
I agree
If you can find contract work, do it, it doesn't hurt. Hiring managers should be understanding about employment gaps given we all understand how bad the job market is. Yet, some hiring managers still have a very old school mindset about what a red flag looks like in a candidate.
Finding the job that becomes a career and life long commitment can sometimes take more time than expected. In the meantime, if finding side work keeps the finances up, then I see no reason in not doing so. ‘Do watcha gotta do but don’t forget your end goal while doing so’.
In retrospect, as a single mother, it can be difficult to ‘not’ work. In a sense, I completely sympathize with you in wanting to consider contract positions while waiting on your goal for a career. And honestly, who wouldn’t respect that you are working durning a ‘limbo phase’ of your career? That is determination on a special level.
Enjoy what works for you
Whatever you do, refuse to give up. Finding a job is a full-time job (at least it has been for me). I signed up on Indeed.com and Zip Recruiter and get lots of emails every day as well as emails from Glassdoor. Try updating your resume using ChatGPT. You'd be surprised how much better you will feel about yourself and submitting a resume when you have a well-worded resume. TIP: as much as it takes time to write a cover letter, always submit a cover letter with your resume because the average person won't fool with that. You have to continually try to set yourself apart from the masses. ChatGPT is very helpful with putting together cover letters. Also, there is a website www.SnagAJob.com that you can look for work close to home based on mileage. I check it from time to time and actually found a good job one time and ended up getting hired. Above all else, pray and ask God to lead you to where He needs you to be in this season of your life. Give Him permission to place you right where you need to be. God bless you and your family.
I had to resign from my position 3 years ago and now no one is really calling me. I also have a degree. Good luck
I believe HR definitely knows looking for a new position is time consuming. If you've done any volunteering or community service during this time surely brings this to their awareness , its truly a benefit. Stay positive job searching, it's a hard task at hand. I know this from my own searching for over a year, and working a part-time position.
