I'm the only woman on my team now. And yes, my team is great! But no, I wouldn't say we relate. I'm married and have a baby, and they are all single guys. Our only life overlap is work, but that's okay!
Encourage your manager/company to post job opening on boards targeted to women and diverse talent. It could be they are missing out on some great talent by not advertising the job openings well. I know I always checked Tech Ladies and Tribaja when I was applying for jobs.
You should look for different groups and women led events throughout your company to connect with women in similar positions. Also, asking to hire women specifically comes off as slightly sexist to me. If there are not enough qualified candidates applying, then it makes sense to have less women in the team.
I don't think it sexist, if a women is the right person for the job why not?
I’m the only female developer in a team of 8 developers. One of the girls on our team left a few years ago for a non tech role. I can’t say I am treated any differently to the guys and I get along well with them all. However I feel the same in terms of relatability. I’m the only female technical professional in the whole company and feel a bit outnumbered. However I think it’s to be expected the low numbers in STEM roles for females. In a way, I’m glad they don’t deliberately hire women. I believe that would be sexist. Trying to meet quotas than hiring great employees
Yes I have. It can certainly be rough. Especially in this field.
I’ve experienced being the only woman multiple times, been in a managerial position and spoken about hiring more women and basically been told no. However, I left to join a company that had more female engineers than I ever knew was possible. I worked in teams where it was 50/50 and that wasn’t unusual. It was really weird to me to start off with but they were all amazing. It was very clear they weren’t there just to make up numbers, they were talented.
It truly does depend on the company and it IS possible. They need to put effort in to women dev meetups, making sure their advert is gender neutral and just advertising to the right community. I know that this should not be on you, but it would help if you attended job fairs etc. because it always helps to inspire other female engineers to join somewhere where they know they won’t be the only one!
You can make friends with women in other teams. I am weary of being friends with teammates regardless of gender anyway.
