For most of America it’s just a day of BBQs and excessive drinking.
Honor and remember the sacrifice and move on.
People have no delusions about the military anymore, going from fighting Hitler to propping one up in Israel. And to a lesser extent provoking Russia.
Vietnam vets were slapped when they returned. It’s not as bad now but on the way there. People are sick of being puppets to the MIC.
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”
- Eisenhower's farewell address
keep digging deeper crayon eater, idk what capitalization has to do with anything but you calling anything intellectual here shows your total lack of intellect
Most people, including those who should really know better, seem to confuse it with Veterans Day. You'll see people posting photos of their relatives who were veterans, but were not killed in a war. Maybe changing the name from Decoration Day was a bad idea, at least the concept of decorating graves provided a clue.
I like Elizabeth Hartman’s take that she recently posted on LinkedIn:

I was in Afghanistan the same time as Cpl Wyatt, he was was 3/5.
Some people for sure try to commemorate the occasion according to the spirit of the holiday but I don't think the average person that doesn't personally know someone who served thinks much about it beyond the surface level.
I have a lot of opinions on our society and service and sacrifice, but I’ll use an anecdote instead and keep it short.
Yesterday, my kids’ school had a talent show. The opener was a class singing Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” The teacher who introduced it gave a spiel and then asked all veterans to stand. My son really wanted me to, and physically forced me to do so. As one of them, I could see the cringe on all the others’ faces who all quickly sat back down. At least for this generation of veterans, we have a lot to think about on this holiday. Point is, even in blue collar patriotic places, people don’t get it. This weekend isn’t for us, especially not for those who didn’t serve alongside the ones who gave it all, and they’ll never really understand that.
We are their (the dead) legacy and memories, and that is all that matters.
Just another reason to put some meat on the grill
