Hi Fishes
I would like to know about the client interviews (especially in data science or machine learning roles).
Are these interviews tough?
Are these interviews meant to assess technical knowledge? For example, what is binomial distribution, what are different data structures in python, ml algorithms etc.
I would request each of the nagarrians to share their thoughts irrespective of the technologies you are working.
I am thankful to you for taking time and helping me out.

I’m an L6 SDM at Amazon but a Meta recruiter sent me an M2 sdm job description. I have all the XP I need from previous job experience but does Meta keep your same level as Amazon? Meaning if I am an L6 at Amazon am I automatically interviewing at M1 or can I jump to an M2?Amazon Facebook (Meta)

Usually it’s the big companies that check but typically they get them verified from their background check vendor. If you’re asked in the job application the schools and degrees you have then assume they will verify .
Generally background verification covers that and it is very easy to find if they do it. Even the closed colleges keep the records. And if it is affiliated to someone else they it's for sure there is.
Most fortune 100 companies do background checks including degree verification.
What would stop you? A personal code of ethics, maybe?
Different difficulty in schooling paired with different academic capability has nothing to do with fairness. Nor is that privilege. Each person has their own distinct combination of brain power and aptitude, which they are responsible for honing. Hard work will win over raw talent more often than not. Especially over the long haul.
I tend be to be of the mindset that you get out what you put in, so I picked the most academically rigorous school I could when selecting my university. And my scholarship required you to keep a 3.5 /4.0 or better gpa, in a school where an A- was only worth 3.6. Plus the electrical engineering program was a 5 year program, which I completed in 4 (because said academic scholarship was renewable for only a 4 year period).
Did I work hard? You bet. Would I have wanted it any other way? Absolutely not. The energy and discipline I developed, in addition to the knowledge gained through the course of study, have helped me through my whole life.

Most companies pay for standard background checks that include degree verification.
Be mindful. There are plenty of news stories of even high executives who get found out years into their tenure of falsifying education and are terminated with cause. Even when they were successful. Better to highlight your skills and experience over education and complete some certifications than risk a ploy that could damage your professional reputation.
Take it from someone who works in tech and has done this….for the last decade I LIED MY ASS OFF and said I had a college degree. NO ONE verified it. Every background check I’ve ever done was for criminal history only. AND I’VE EVEN WORKED IN THE DEFENSE SECTOR LOL! I worked at each tech job I’ve had since hs for 2-5 yrs and it never came up.
For D1 “mOsT rEcRuItErS wIiL nOt iNtErVieW yOu iF tHeY nEvEr hEaRd oF yOuR sChoOL” I call CAP bc most recruiters never gave a flying f*** about school and only asked about *work experiences*. There are thousands of small colleges no one has ever heard of so get off your high horse for a recruiter not knowing where you went. One article citing 8/10 recruiter opinions does not the whole recruiting industry make. I turned down an offer from a FAANG company in favor of a smaller org so I don’t have to worry about layoffs. And the recruiter just took the education on my resume for face value and kept it pushin.
My job offers tuition reimbursement so I said screw it and will graduate in 3 mo with my bachelor in cs (online school, 8 week semesters, accelerated program has allowed me to get a bachelors in 2 yrs as a full time student/employee vs 4 yrs like everyone else). I’m only getting my degree as a formality and bc it’s free for me. My degree is work I do and learned on my own so it’s light work really, not much brain power needed.
Degrees are a formality at best. If you wanna get one, cool bro do you and if you don’t, you can still work in tech don’t stress.
Yes some employers will ask for degree verification and you won’t know until it’s too late. I’ve dodged this issue somehow over the last decade but it may not work in your favor. Everyone is different.
If you wanna lie, like I have lol, go for it and hope for the best. If you lie and get caught srry bro - it is a risk and I’ve curved it for years luckily. If you want to tell the truth, online state schools are more accessible/affordable than ever. Financial aid, employer reimbursements and scholarships can help offset costs. You can do school part time while working if you want as well.
Do what works for *you* bump all the noise.
Also nothing is stopping you from joining a college, getting a job, them verifying you’re a student there and then just dropping out too lol. I’ve never heard of an employer asking you later on “hey how’s school going?” but what do I know. They might who knows.
Goooood luuucckk!
Nice projection. I have not been rude, nor condescending. I also haven’t forced anything on you. You choose to continue to read. Or you don’t. Either way is of zero impact to me.
I think you might want to re-read what you just wrote and decide if you’re following your own maxim (be nice).
You are telling yourself a fictional story about who I am. Which is fine - it’s fiction, not reality. And it’s your fiction. Maybe it makes you feel better about ignoring the responses I and many others have made to your OP. Don’t know, don’t care.
I’m not sure what you are reading as defensive in my responses. They were explanatory in an attempt to help you expand your perception a bit. Clearly I was unsuccessful.
I wish you well, and I wish you wisdom in your decisions.
I’ll close with the same line you did, because I believe you genuinely need to be told this: be nice.
Nothing will stop you. The background check , interview process and the fact that most companies will take legal action against you if caught.
If you can’t do what you need to do to make it in , you don’t deserve the position in my opinion. But hey, if you can cheat your way in Kudos.🤷🏽♂️
A legal battle is only expensive if you pay for a lawyer. Unless you sign a contract there are no damages.

If the college no longer exists, they can ask you to scan the degree or provide a transcript.
If you can’t provide either, they can revoke an offer or even your job on the spot.
I worked at a company where someone was fired a year and a half after they started because it was found out that they lied on their application and claimed they had a degree that they didn’t have.
About half of my jobs have done a background check that included degree verification. About half of those required transcripts. I’ve been in tech for 22 years.
Just claim one from a college that no longer exists. They couldn’t find out. My friend has done this fwiw
They can make sure that the dates line up, as an example if the school closed before you went to HS they’d know
Years ago, employers relied on resume alone, however in the last few years, they have started to verify almost everything on resumes. If someone does give false information, they can fire them immediately, if hired already, or not hire them to begin with. So, I don’t know who will have the last laugh.
A very small employer will likely not verify your credentials. But they will fire an employee for not performing well.
yep these checks have increased so much that there are whole companies who verify documents for hirers. So it's literally just a gamble.
Being actually in HR for one of the largest company in the world, I would say very few who do!
After 9/11 everything is verified
They do verify. As a matter of fact, someday they will ask you to send your diploma or so.
I used to work for a background check company. They absolutely check the veracity of your degree. If they can’t confirm it right away, you may be hired provisionally pending confirmation.
I got denied a job because the interviewer had never heard of the college I graduated from….. It was Purdue.
She might have been a Ball State grad.🤷♂️
@Software Developer … well, what should stop you is the fact that having integrity and being someone of character is something that you do even when no one else is looking. And while you think that your future employer would never know, just remember that karma always says “I saw that!”
Besides that, we always did extensive background checks (including verifying degrees/colleges) in our recruiting business - and anyone caught lying at that point was an immediate no start with the client (and we would code them “do not work” in the database for future reference as well).
On so many levels, this is not something you should even consider doing (but it’s probably too late, since you are clearly already considering it). It would absolutely be a hard no for me.
If the person said they went to a school but did not graduate then that’s fine if you have the professional experience needed for the role.
We disqualify people who lie on their background check application because it’s an ethics issue.
Companies aren’t going to call each university themselves. There are services that can give a background on you. That service could still show a degree from a closed university. So they could still wonder why yours DIDN’T show a degree from a closed university. They could still ask for a copy of your diploma or transcript. A college or university that closes in an orderly fashion will have a process for getting transcripts.
It's been my experience that they do, although some places in a desperate situation may hire before verifying. I once worked at a place that hired a guy because they needed somebody for the role ASAP. Then, they couldn't verify his degree and it turned out he had spent one semester at that college before dropping out. He was laid off for the lie, but worked for a month or so before he was found out.
