Usually it’s the big companies that check but typically they get them verified from their background check vendor. If you’re asked in the job application the schools and degrees you have then assume they will verify .
Generally background verification covers that and it is very easy to find if they do it. Even the closed colleges keep the records. And if it is affiliated to someone else they it's for sure there is.
Every employers background check I’ve ever done has checked for education. I went to a tech school that closed and it was a nightmare providing a diploma to a school that doesn’t exist and had to get the state involved to get a letter they recognize the school existed and my diploma to show I completed it

Integrity
Adding I agree with the rest. Integrity and honesty. You’ll break both if you’re ever discovered. I know I wouldn’t hire someone who lied but if they said I don’t have any I’d respect them telling me so.
You want to walk forward in life with your held head high and lying isn’t that
Any company who cares about their IP does their due diligence.
I would be curious what would make someone ask such a sketchy question.
As a responsible cyber security professional, I must say, there is one important step in hiring: Extensive background checks. This includes degree verification. Even if the college goes out of business, they either transfer these records to another institution, if they are accredited, or hand them to a for-profit company to send the transcripts or diplomas for a fee. Otherwise don’t bother to lie, you can buy any unaccredited diplomaif you need to.
Apart from the fact it shows you have a complete lack of integrity?
It's all cute until every McDonalds fry cook suddenly attended Harvard Law, then come the enforced background checks because every toilet plunger has decided they can cheat the system.
OP is right that you can probably get away with it today. But a year or two from now? I suspect one of AI's first jobs will be to scan candidates credentials and backgrounds precisely because of this behavior.
By all means, do it. I need the trash to get blackballed out of tech; it drives up demand and salaries for qualified talent.
I had 3 companies and I had to provide verification since my educational institute closed their campus. I had to use https://www.parchment.com/ to request copy of diploma and transcripts. It took longer than I expected so it’s best to get them now for future employment.
Why would you even ask a question like that? It is called INTEGRITY my friend…. INTEGRITY. If you would lie about something as simple as a degree how am I to trust you wouldn’t program something wrong. SMH…
They will definitely check brother
I knew of a guy who got an engineering BS, attended a semester of B-school, dropped out, and claimed he had an MBA which he did not, and still got hired. The sad thing is he would have been hired anyway if he just said he didn't finish the MBA at the time. This was a while ago, when people took other people at their word more.
But anyway, he worked at the company for 35 years, starting as junior engineer, when the company was an established, but still small, regional electronics manufacturer. The company was very successful. And he personally was extremely successful within in, so much so that he was made the CEO of the company by which time it was a Global Fortune 100 conglomerate.
Anyway, he did get along too well with the company's established CTO. He thought that this guy was a layabout and didn't get much done for the company, and tried to push the CTO out, who got an audience with the board of directors. The CTO knew this guy didn't have his MBA, even though he claimed it in his executive bio. He outed the CEO in front of the board, and the whole corporation. He wasn't fired, but he never commanded the same respect, and about 18 months later he went into retirement, a wealthy man no doubt, but with a cloud over him.
Fantastic story
Fake it, break it. Do you really want that shadow? My advice to job seekers is DO SOMETHING TO demonstrate your capabilities. Volunteer to use your skills at organizations like Scouts, Little League, VFW, American Legion, food banks, Americorps, etc. Bring THAT to the table,
This! So much this. Use your skills for something good, which also happens to build your portfolio. Be honest on your applications because dishonesty is a HUGE red flag (and hopefully because you’re a good human being) and whether you have a degree or not won’t matter that much in the long run. Some of my favorite peers don’t have degrees. They have experience. And I wouldn’t trade them for ANYONE else.
Most jobs don’t care, why lie? But yeah, if you like keeping life a little *exciting* go ahead. I strongly suggest something your knowledgeable on or something you can bullshit through.
Maybe the team wants to hire them from contractor to full time and they are blocked only by asinine rules.
My company does degree verification. And if getting a degree under their tuition assistance program, you literally have to bring the physical degree into them to verify you got it.
Degree verification is just a check box on background searches, tbh its all about getting your job done, I’ve hired MBAs that were basically useless in their role, and I’ve hired highschool grads that you would think are PHDs in the field
Hard to get people to give you a chance without that piece of paper. Nice to hear there are people who understand you can still be knowledgeable and do an effective job without a degree
Nothing. Trump University might be a reach though
I worked in talent acquisition they check everything don’t lie
💯☝️
Well. I dropped off my CS degree and just went through a bootcamp.. that help me out to get into tech as SE starting off at JP Morgan, then went to Amazon and I just end up working for a German company which I highly recommend :) better than any big company here in US
Just pick a name from the top 10 tech universities and put it down with a masters degree in something cool.
That’s the response of someone who knows they have no legitimate argument…
Most employers do verify college degrees, especially for roles that require specific qualifications or professional credentials. While claiming a degree from a closed college might seem like a loophole, many companies conduct thorough background checks that include education verification through third-party services. So, it's risky to fabricate qualifications. If you're looking to boost your skills in engineering or tech, a better approach would be to use resources like https://essays.edubirdie.com/engineering-assignment-help Edubirdie, where you can find engineering assignment help and enhance your knowledge the right way.
