How many hours do biglaw associates actually work in a week? What are y’all’s schedules like? I’ve only heard about billables, and opinions on whether the workload is manageable or insane. I’ve seen the Yale estimate that billables are only 2/3 of actual time worked, but what’s it actually like?

During trial - all waking hours from 6am to basically midnight or 1am

Long day - 10-11 hours

Normal day - 7-8 billable hours

Slow day - I’ve had days between like 3-5 billable hours.

I’ve seen that things fluctuate so much in litigation that when it’s heavy, it’s super heavy, but when it’s light, it’s very nice
Slower -

Non-billable probably 2 hours a day at least? Just taking breaks and transitioning, commuting, etc

Like 55 on average tbh. Harder part is inconsistent hours (i.e. the 100+ hour filing/trial week)

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Hello all,

I went ahead and purchased a house with a loan principal amount of 500k couple months ago. Interest rate is at 4.875%. As a first time home owner, I didnt really think about the interest rate as I was trying to weigh the cost of renting vs mortgaging. so, I was mentally sold on the idea of purchasing the house. However, as I have started my payments, I feel bogged down with the fact that I will be paying so much interest initially. While my income is 161k (single income), continued..

Interesting. Let’s see if the uptick In cases continues to drive an uptick in hospitalizations and then in fatalities. Depends on how many of the cases are incidental or in very young people not prone to severe cases. But either way, look at the hospital capacity utilization figures! This is the untold story. Were we bending the curve to avoid unnecessary deaths due to overcrowded hospitals, or were we bending the curve to buy time for treatments and vaccine, or just to slow fatalities?

Do you pay your credit cards in full every month?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
