Subject matter expert with my CPA. I’m completely fed up with the compliance aspect of public accounting Tax but don’t mind the technical side. Does it make sense to become an attorney to get out of compliance work and still do something related to specialty tax?
Or do I just go the college professor route? Wouldn’t mind working @ BNA or something like that either but I’m seriously fed up with everything about tax compliance and can’t keep doing this

If you have a cpa do NOT go to law school only to continue in tax. The exception is if you can afford to quit and score high enough on the LSAT to get into a top 10 law school, and/or you are independently wealthy.

Not sure how ESM works. But here I am in tax consulting and never go near compliance. Also have second year staff who never have to deal with it either. Yes, we have Monday off...

You could. At least you won’t be doing compliance!

Compliance is often a rite of passage for many tax professionals. All of your options sound great. Whether you stay in public and specialize, practice tax law, or go into academia, the strongest technical tax specialists I know are those who know how it should also be reported on a return, not just provide a hypothetical explanation of how a position would be viewed by the IRS. Best of luck on your journey!

like

Thank you EY1! I can’t wait for this rite of passage to end in October.

I wouldn’t recommend spending three years (or four if you also get an LLM) and $150k+ on law school if you just want to do less compliance.

The best tax technical work is generally performed by CPAs and attorneys at the Big4. I’d see if there are options to do a tour in your firm’s national tax practice.

like

Agree. Unless you are in my business unit. They love lawyers over people who have inside experience drafting the underlying laws at the state assembly

I feel like I understand what you’re talking about. You get the concepts, the forms make sense so why are people struggling?

What I’ve had to pause and think about is that a lot of the stuff people are working through is brand new to them (I’ve got experience from PY and provision). So if I can show them the forms and explain what they’re trying to accomplish maybe they’ll foster an understanding 🤞. Let’s hope it works lol.

You don’t need to be an attorney to do a specialty. Although, being at RSM probably isn’t going to help your desire to do a specialty (have. A friend who is in it’s there and they can’t fully keep him busy). Make the jump to a b4.

like

Is there a Tax Dept at RSM? I had a manager who wanted to be less client facing, mostly for family, and transitioned into our National Tax group. National Tax used to do a lot of internal tax return reviews, but they changed that last year. Now they’re internal resources for the firm, and focus on understanding new tax legislation as it comes out. Honestly not sure what else they do... but anyway, seems like a good pivot for someone who likes tax but wants to get away from the public accounting grind

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?
