Write a complain, use dramatic language, emphasize that you are paying top bucks for the ticket and have a choice to fly with other airlines, and missed a lot of scheduled commitments because of the delay. Let them decide how many points, it always works for me.
Depends on length of delay. If it's longer than 2 hours, I've been able to get 15k with American and 35k with Delta
I've never had success getting points from Delta for delays. Are you guys just emailing their regular help desk and asking for points straight up?
Me and my husband each got $300 vouchers which we used to take a trip to Bermuda, best delay ever!!!
10-20k... lots of factors however, how long, did you have a connection, were you well informed of the delay, etc. I've gotten everything from $200 vouchers to 10k miles.
So 3 hour delay that turned into a cancellation leading to missed meetings at the client site?
Do you make the ask though or do you let them make the offer? Not sure if I am doing this wrong; in the past I make a complaint but don't explicitly ask for points.
Personally I've always asked directly and one time they offered me 7500 points for a 7 hour delay to which I responded and said it was not enough
Don't use "dramatic language"... stick to the facts and be direct about what you want - 3 hour delay, followed by a cancelled flight due to mechanical issues with the airplane. I would like to be compensated for my flight in the form of a $200 voucher.

Google and read the airlines policy about compensation based on your delay length and ask for whats on that policy. Usually the longer the delay the more $, don't just blindly ask for points, it could be less than what you actually deserve based on their policy.
