Depends on the firm, discipline, and region. You need to understand what is going on in your specific situation with your peers - a 5 year senior manager in some disciplines should be expecting promotion shortly, while in other disciplines, there is a greater expectation on years as a SM. Small offices might have additional hurdles based upon book of business necessary to support a promotion. Sorry I cannot be more specific, but it really does depend on a bunch of factors. My background is in various disciplines in a few different B4 firms, and the only consistency is inconsistency.
Which firm? What geographical area? And what function?
Being able to make partner is usually dependent on the book of business you have created and brought into the firm. At Moss there is a 3.5mm new business requirement you have to bring in before even being considered for a partner spot. Have you brought in any new business to help support you partner play?
3-8 years is typical. Anything longer than 8, you’re not making partner
