Most of my friends make under 150k and live perfectly comfortable. They either live with partners, or with a roommate which is pretty standard. Also be open to living in areas less expensive but accessible (close to train lines). If you end up paying around 2-2.5k in rent you’ll feel extremely comfortable making 250k
You’ll be fine. You just won’t be able to live on billionaire row or expensive neighborhoods
Living comfortably is also subjective
I’d recommend living outside manhattan for more living space and to get a one bedroom instead of a studio apartment. Court Square area is convenient with multiple train options and your salary can get a nice one bedroom there. $150k salary is more than enough to live here though to answer your question
I see 9 units between the hunters point and queensboro plaza. That said, 3750 is the absolute max OP can legally pay
I know people living in Astoria who make that and live very comfortably
$150,000 divided by 40 is $3,750. That’s the max rent you can afford.
That’s a studio in Manhattan, or living with roommates. If you want to live solo, you have to do an outer borough or dig deep to find a rent stabilized apartment.
That’s the standard that NY landlords use.
I’m at 135k salary living in manhattan east village prime location next to all the transit. But I have 2 roommates. That said, we got a steal at 2.7k each for our 3bd apt. I’m house poor because I’m paying down debts heavily but if no debt things would be super rad, more than just livable!
It's totally doable -- I've lived here on much less -- but that doesn't mean it's the tradeoff you want to make. So much depends on what parts of NYC you are interested in living in, what kind of home you want, whether you have kids and if so, do you want to send them to private school?
If you do go for it, I recommend saving up those bonuses to buy outright in a few years. It's much easier to buy here in an all cash deal.
What company pays like that i have been stuck on 140$k in a financial consulting firm from past 4 years. Finance AVP level in NY. Most of jobs of my level data and BI related in finance are 140k max
I’m not in the finance field so don’t know all of them but a few names for private equity are KKR, Blackstone, and Warburg Pincus. There’s a lot of boutique PEs and VCs though with similar comp structures. For investment banking the largest are Goldman Sachs, JPMC, and Morgan Stanley. I’d do a lot of research into WLB and compensation for these firms though because in general people making the most money will also work insane hours (80-100 hr weeks)
Depends a lot on if you're single or married/kids, lifestyle you're used to living, etc. $150k/year won't make you rich here but I know plenty of people living on half that and doing just fine. Also depending on how you save/invest after Y1 you could have pretty significant addt'l interest income
By living comfortably do you mean having disposable income or living in a nice apt? When I moved here (pre-COVID) everyone told me I’d never be home so don’t worry about getting the nicest apt. SO glad I didn’t listen. My rent was almost a full paycheck (I made around 155k at the time) but it was the best decision I ever made. I still made enough where I didn’t feel house poor
