Mentor
It’s hardest when you are a junior - at least in a lot of ways.
So, I would ask you: What do you mean when you say you have had a rough go of it? Depending on the problem, it very well might be the kind of thing that will pass or that is a firm problem rather than a you problem.
Come to energy project development and finance and m&a. Assets are renewable/energy generation projects. Client goal is a product that is good for society.
A5, Honestly not impossible. Lots of renewables companies are trying to raise capital. Could be a bridge
Real estate
Depending on what has made your experience rough, going to a different firm (even if you stay in the same space) could be helpful. I have learned that for me personally, more enjoyment of my work is dependent upon who I am working with, mutual respect, the support their (which can come in various forms), constant learning, setting boundaries and firm culture. These things certainly will not fix you disliking the practice area, but can be extremely helpful if you do and are having a rough time for other reasons.
Going in house (if you can find an opportunity) can be a good option. VC/emerging growth work is another option, as is securities focused practice (very high learning curve there) and general corporate work.
Funds. It’s transactional with, as far as I can tell, the best life balance. Plus you get exposure to other areas like vc and pe as well as real estate.
I did M&A my entire first year and didnt like it enough to stick with all the BS. I am now focused on EC/VC. Also a first year work in any corporate work is pretty similar so you aren’t as pigeon-holed as you may think
I made this same move as well. Like it better
EC/VC!
I agree with EC/VC and made this move. T&E is heavily tax driven, so you’d have to be interested in that kind of work.
