How much would you spend on a single piece of jewelry for yourself?

I’m usually a very frugal person, but wanted to commemorate a few major life and professional milestones. I spent 2+ years researching the decision (to ensure it was financially sound) and finally spent almost 10K on a Cartier bracelet and ring. I’ve worn it every day since. It is a daily reminder of the accomplishment and makes me feel so good 😊

I've never been a big jewelry fan. I wouldn't feel comfortable spending more than $300 on a piece of jewelry for myself, and would probably be upset if the husband dropped more than $3,000 for a ring, necklace or bracelet for me.

I spent several thousand dollars on my diamond stud earrings I wear every day —I bought them for myself when I made partner. If I live to be 75 (and all my grandparents lived in to their 90s except one grandma that was 101), they will have cost me a quarter per day, so totally worth it. Otherwise a few hundred dollars for other jewelry like rings or necklaces.

Depends on what I have in “spare change” but will say I’ve spent 10k for diamond piece

I spent $9,500 to buy a solitaire diamond to match another I had been given by my mom to create a pair of stud earrings. It was worth about $13,500 (I had a connection to get a great price), but more importantly, my mom was at the end of her life so the pair are an amazing memento of her.

Follow up question- where are you all buying everyday workwear jewelry? I need my jewelry to demonstrate a little more maturity these days than what I bought in my 20s.

Thank you all!

Not more than $100! Haha

Definitely, for me at least, lab grown diamonds are important. I’m not a big spender on jewelry. So it’s a partial cost concern, but also there’s no reason to be buying diamonds that were the result of people putting their lives at risk. Max id spent on myself is $500 and I also would want a gift of more than $3k to $4k. Also, I’m not sure I understand how jewelry works as investment pieces these days since I’ve never really heard anything about a resale market other than for $10 million or above pieces etc.

like

I agree. I think when people say "investment pieces" for jewellery I think they generally mean "jewellery which I will wear for years to come and maybe pass on as a family heirloom" as opposed to "I expect a positive ROI on this purchase"
Most new jewellery doesn't retain its original price for resale let alone appreciate in value. Only very very high end jewellery is a true investment piece eg very rare (large or unusual colour) high quality gems, or limited production very high end designer jewellery.

$2500 was the most I’ve spent. It was on a rose gold and diamond ring that I love.

I bought a bracelet last week for $34. I thought that was quite extravagant!

like

That’s so wild. I mean most i spent was like $50 or so maybe
Until i bought Dior earrings for $300 , which isnt even real gold i think lol
Which by the way i “lost” and ended up finding them in the washing machine 😭

Why we don’t want to spend on jewerly?

like

Depends on what it is. Investment piece (pearls, diamond earrings, tennis bracelet) or more every day to wear for a few years.

Not more than $250 and usually far less. I have a large collection of costume jewelry. I would wear cubic zirconia studs if I was going for a diamond look and people would assume they’re real so why bother paying for diamonds? I do have real diamond rings but all were gifts.

I think the most I’ve ever spent was a $200 bracelet.

I sometimes bought pieces that were symbolic of a personal moment. A big change of job. Or a fabulous trip: a hearth shaped ruby necklace encircled with small diamonds - bought in Thailand for 4k. I regret I didn’t get the matching earrings…. But it would have been too many hearts to wear.

So as a 30ish yo with a government/PE/tech background and CIPM/CIPP… I’m finding privacy work is just much easier and interesting than other kinds, but still pays plenty well.

Is it too late/inadvisable to go to law school to specifically aim for privacy work?

I just find some firms are unwilling to entertain the idea that anyone but a lawyer has anything relevant to contribute in this space…

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.

Question, if you pay off your house isn’t a 100k salary more than enough to sustain a good lifestyle? My goal has always been to payoff my mortgage then find a really easy analyst role to sustain my expenses. Assuming I’m a director/VP by the time my mortgage is paid off I’d probably be able to do an analyst 40hr week in like 10hrs. Esp at some of these low expectation companies. What do y’all think about this plan?
